Evaluation Question 1- In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Media products can develop and challenge their typical conventions through different aspects of the film.
The video below explains the basic ideas of what our film contained to conform with a typical thriller and the aspects included challenges to the typical conventions of a thriller film.

As mentioned in this video our film follows the typical conventions of a thriller opening sequence. Here are examples of real films that support the challenges and similarities made in our thriller opening.

Ident- Idents are at the beginning of ever film and so we have included our production logo at the beginning. Like Paramount, we have used our name to produce an ident that 'reflects' it.

Title- the title used in our thriller opening is simple as it doesn't really need much effect as the shocking title name is enough to twist the audiences minds. Similarly 'Oldboys' title is simplistic with white writing on a black background to ensure it stands out and makes an impact.

Music/sound effects- The music used changes to build tension as we get further into the clip like in the Black Swan opening where as more drama unfolds, the music increases with it to build up the the tension and twists in a thriller.

Here is the Black Swan opening music.

Similar to our style of build up in The Black Widow.

So there is the way in which or film opening follows the conventions and challenges the conventions of a typical thriller. I feel that Reflection Studios have successfully challenged and conformed with conventions of a thriller film in a way that is clear and comparable to blockbuster thrillers of today.

Official Final Cut

So here it is, the final edition of the Black Widow thriller opening.

15 Mar 2014

Second Rough Cut

After refilming and making changes to the first footage we filmed, here is the new version of The Black Widow. Changes have been made throughout however the storyline is still the same.
So here it is, The Black Widow rough cut number 2.

Original Final Cut

After all the editing of the footage and soundtrack, here is our final edit of The Black Widow.

However after the feedback given about the location and lighting issues, we have decided to re shoot some of our film, meaning this won't be our actual final cut.

Things such as:

  • Lighting issues
  • Locations not being convincing
  • Actor problems
  • Sound issues
Need to be changed in order to make our film convincing as a Thriller Opening.

Rough Cut Feedback

We recorded the feedback in which they gave us allowing us to see where the changes needed to be made and in some places, audience members explain how we could change it to make it more suited to the film.

Here is the feedback in which we collected.

Some of the feedback give to us can quickly be changed such as the shortening of some of the clips e.g. the establishing shot at the beginning and the gravel shot when the figure walked in.

A lot of the feedback means we have to re-film some of the film and we are considering changing location due to the trouble we had with covering all the existing materials that were already in the room before we started filming.

As you can see the feedback we collected gives us the criticism Reflection Studios need in order to create a film that is entertaining with all the conventions of a thriller as well as address the needs of our chosen target audience.

Some of the feedback we had was from our target audience, which is what really counts as they know what their age group and gender wants. Here is the feedback:

  • Shot of the stones is too long. We get that it is stones and I can hear you have included a SFX but simply pause then within a second Ryma steps in, would be more effective.
  • Almost a jump shot to when the hockey stick is introduced. Feet seem to be in a different position and the cut alludes and tracts attention towards the error.
  • o.35- shadow on the wall. Although not a vital importance, this could also show lack of 3 point lighting technique. Obviously going to be some shadow from normal lighting but this is too much.
  • Phone call SFX- Volume is too loud doesn't sound like a mobile phone.
  • Cut Alex during phone call is too quick. Change cut.
  • When Ryma picks up the teddy to be-head it, we lose the top of the teddys head in the frame. We partially miss the point of focus on the teddy. (i.e. to pull its head off), because of the framing.
  • 1.10 Jump MOA. Alex walking throughout he door, is not smooth.
  • Voice over doesn't mae sense. it is too much like he is actually talking and his lips are just not moving. You need to add effects to the voice ego try and convince us that it is a voice over.
  • Looks as if alex is speaking when he is in Ryma's room, but unsure whether it is the voiceover or alex actually speaking aloud. His lips don't move then they do a little bit- IT"S CONFUSING.
  • Alex picks up the picture of him and Ryma, don't pan to the picture let Alex pick it up then use a POV shot of Alex looking at the picture
  • Some signs that don't fit in with the scene. Only minor but may be a little misleading.
  • Cut on the hockey stick- You need to let the hockey stick get closer to Alex's head. There is obviously some distance and Ryma actually stops on the clip. It needs to look as though Ryma has hit him and then you should cut it.
  • Titles- The titles are a little plain. Due to the SFX that is being used (a sort of lightening effect) you could have the titles flash and flicker to co-inside with this.

Now the feedback has been gathered, next up is the re-editing stage where we will be changing parts of the film according to the feedback we were given by our target audiences as well as any tweaks we as a production company feel need to be made.

The Black Widow-Rough Cut

Now the first lot of editing is complete we can now show you the first cut of The black Widow opening. This doesn't contain the ident as this will be put in when we are certain the film is all correct and to our liking.

So here it is, the first cut of The Black Widow...

Once we had completed the rough cut it was time to see what an audience thought. Our audience consisted of people in the age range in which our film is aimed at so that the feedback they gave us would be helpful and allow us to make it more suitable for our target audience.

The next post will show you all the feedback we had and specific feedback made by people that are apart of our intended audience or that we agree fully with.

Actors Release Form

To allow us to use the footage we got of the actors, we needed them to sign an 'Actors Release Form' to ensure that all the footage we have of them can be used with there permission or if they are under 18 there parents permission.

Here are our actors release forms giving us the full rights to their acting in our footage.

10 Mar 2014

Construction of Ident

We had the name Reflection Studios, and idea of what ident we could have to represent our production company but now it was time to actually create the ident to put at the beginning of our film before the on screen action commenced.

Our ident needed to represent the idea of reflection where by our name reflected in some way or another whether it be in a mirror or the idea we had in the first place which was a lake.

We used 'Adobe After Effects' to create the river style reflection we wanted to reflect our production company. Here is where the creative idea of reflecting the name of our production company came from.

The effects were chosen and the name entered so that when it was played the name was reflected in the river as designed previously when researching about idents.

Once the ident had been created, some idents do have music over the top of them and so we found a piece of music that sounded relaxing and smooth as if you were sitting by a river or looking down at the reflection and so thought it would be appropriate to place over the top of our ident.
Here is the sound we chose for our ident.

Now this is what the final ident looks like.

We also have a second ident called 'Rocket Films' which again has an ident to reflect the name. This is often what production companies do, they pick their name and design their ident around it. In this case we created an ident in the style of a rocket or firework.

This too was done in 'Adobe After Effects' and then the sound added later. We thought it would be a good idea to stick to something simple and so had a firework sound as the ident appeared on screen.

And so here is Rocket Films ident.

So these idents are added to the beginning of the film. Now its time to continue editing the footage and sound ready for the final cut of The Black Widow.

Editing The Black Widow

Now its time to edit our footage. We are going to be use Soundtrack Pro and Final Cut Express
Editing in Final Cut

To create our thriller film the footage was edited using Final Cut Express. This allows us to edit the footage we collected by changing the colouring, length, adding titles etc. The image below shows us in the editing stage of the Black Widow.

Editing Day to Night

We were unsure on how to change the colouring of the shots for our film so that it went from looking like a nice calm place in the day to a creepy, deserted place no one would dare to go to so late at night. Our solution was to search for a tutorial online to see how other people had made their scenes look like night time. The video about will show you what we found and watched in order to create our dark effect.
Once watching the video through once we then played it along side, pausing it as we did each step to ensure the colouring for the scenes was the same as the next. Bellow you will see one of the shots taken from The Black Widow where the shot was filmed in the day time, but through colour change and setting change on the shot, the night time effect was achieved.

This is the process that we have to go through with all of the shots in the film opening however due to natural light and artificial light, the settings may have to different to that of another shot so it does take time to get the colour correct and precise so that all the scene lighting matches up.

Editing in Soundtrack Pro

The sound is edited separately to the film and added later in final cut. This is where all the music and sound effects are added and edited to create the atmosphere and make the film. Here is a screen shot of us editing some of the music and adjusting the volume of the original sound track.

Once all the shots are in place and the sound has been edited, the rough cut will of The Black Widow will be ready to be presented to our target audience to see what the think of it.

Shooting On Location Day 3

On the final day of planned filming, reflection Studios got the footage for the rest of the film including the scene where Crimson receives the phone call from Luke and the part where Luke enters Crimson's room after his threatening call. These scenes differ and so different elements of these clips needed to be changed adding or taking away light etc.

Before even starting to film, we had to dress the room up so that it looked more like a girls room rather than the social room it is usually used for.

The tracking dolly shot was filmed first where we zoom in on Crimson as she is playing with her dolls etc. The tracking dolly was later used again to film the follow shot as Luke enters Crimson's room to meet his doom. These shots took quite a few takes as the camera was either moving too fast so out cut off the actors head or was too slow so the actor went walking off without us being able to catch them in the frame.

Next up was the close up of the phone and the response Crimson gives when she hears what Luke has to say.  This was them followed by the shots of Crimson putting the phone down and a match on action shot of the bear being grabbed and thrown on the floor.

We then moved on to filming the scene where Luke enters the room and discovers the hidden truth about Crimson followed by the shot where by Crimson enters with the hockey stick from the beginning of the Thriller opening and swings to hit Luke on the head. This also took a few takes as we needed to ensure that each camera angle matches the previous as many of the shots were MOA shot.

Finally we filmed the scene where Luke enters Crimson's house and walks up the stairs to 'meet his doom'. This was also going to be MOA and so the actor was made to repeat his actions to ensure that the shots would match up when they were all edited together.

So thats the end of filming, now its time to get editing process. This includes the music, titles and the actual camera footage.

Shooting On Location Day 2

Reflection studios filmed two scenes today. In Crimson's room where he discovers Crimson isn't what she seems and Luke's side of the phone call when he calls Crimson.

We firstly set up the equipment in the bedroom area due to the bad weather in hope that it would clear up so we could film the scene where Luke is on the phone to Crimson, threatening to come round without explaining why. We briefed the actor to make sure that he knew what he was doing when and how. We gave him some time to read over the script and did practice runs with him to ensure he knew his actions and movement choices throughout each shot. Then we set the camera rolling.

We later filmed the 'Discovery' scene where Luke finds out about Crimson's dark side however we were bit filming the whole scene until day 3 of the shooting. We then moved the camera and reflector outside however it was still raining! Reflection Studios discussed whether to go ahead with the filming or not. We all knew that we needed to keep to the filming schedule and so we decided to go ahead with the filming. It turned out the weather had a positive effect on the filming, allowing the shots of this scene to look darker and grimmer which added tot he plot-thickening atmosphere.

One day left of filming and then its onto the editing!

11 Feb 2014

Shooting On Location Day 1

Today Reflection Studios filmed the 'Wasteland' shots for the thriller opening. This is when a mysterious character is seen walking through the empty area of land with a hockey stick and leaving, never revealing the identity of the character.

We set up all the equipment, waited for our actress to arrive then began the process of filming. Before even considering to film, we ensured that our actress knew exactly what was going to happen and when by showing her the storyboard and animatic of the scene we were about to film. After watching the animatic and explaining the storyboard images we walked our actress through the route and timing of her movement in the scene.

After all the preparing, it was then time to start filming. The first shot we filmed was the establishing shot of the wasteland to show the audience where they are and set the scene for our thriller before any character enters. This shot took a few takes until we were happy with the smooth pan of the shot.

Next up was the close up of the gravel followed by the entrance of the mysterious figure. We again walked the actress through the route and timing then ran the camera for the first time.

This shot was then followed by a close up of the feet and the entrance of the hockey stick. This allows us to add suspicion to the figure however we still won't see anything other than the feet at this point. The feet then exit the shot; this was repeated many times to ensure that the feet and the hockey stick were in the exact same shot as the previous one as this will be match on action.

We took a break due to the bad weather then went back to record the last few shots of footage for this location. The last shot filmed today was the hooded figure walking off into the dark alley way, still not seeing the face of the character. The night was drawing and so the 3 point lighting allowed us to brighten up the darker alley we were filming in.

Once all the film footage for this location was filmed all that was left to do today was collect the location sound. We needed a gravel sound that could be dubbed over the top of the characters feet when they were walking and so we got the actress to repeat the movement she did in the actual scene, making sure she walks at the same pace as she does in the actual film shot.

So that's day 1 of our filming complete so next up is day 2 with the interior and exterior shots at Crimson's house.

5 Feb 2014

Shooting Schedule

Film pitch, plan, research you name it is all done so it's nearly time to film the thriller opening. However to know what you're doing when is all down to organisation. So here is the shooting schedule we will be following. There will be a diary kept on what we do each day to but this is a basic plan of our filming time.

With all this complete, let the filming begin! We will be keeping a film diary so you can see what we get up to each day on location!

Risk Assessment

We all know that when out filming anywhere there's always some risk, whether it be an unstable surface or a herd of cattle in the way. There are usually risks on locations that you film on so a risk assessment must be made for filming. This would be handed out to the actors and crew members so all are aware of the risk and what preventions are put in place to stop accidents from happening.

Below you will find the risk assessment produced for the locations we will be shooting on.

So we're coming to the end of the preparation for filming. Planning the shooting schedule so we know what's being filmed when and where with who is the last thing then its time to shoot our thriller!

Animatics

We've got the storyboard sorted so now its time to turn the images from that into an animatic.

What is an animatic?

An animatic is a moving storyboard. It shows you what your film is going to look like (roughly). Using the drawings from the storyboard a rough idea of what your film will look like can be gaged from it. All the dialogue, music etc. will be added to your animatic.

Animatics before technology?

Before the technology film companies have today to create their animatics, an animatic used to be either a filmed storyboard or even taped. Nowadays advancement in technology allows us to create more detailed and accurate ideas of what our film will look like.
There are different types of animatic. There are:
  • Photomatics- Use of photographs to create an animatic
  • Videomatics- re used videos that were filmed for something but never used (also known as rip-o-matics)
Nowadays most just create their animatic using 2d or 3d software, some even have their own software to do so.

What is in an animatic?

Include in an animatic is...everything! (well almost) You will have:
  • Music
  • Dialogue
  • Idents
  • Titles
  • Film Title
  • Images of the film/photographs (obviously)
Basically you'll have a finished film only made of a lot of drawings.

Advantages of producing an animatic
  • It enables you to see what your film is going to look like when created.
  • You can see and change any major mistakes and bad shots and ideas before its too late meaning the cost to recreate a shot in a different way will be lower.
  • You can get an idea of how long your film is going to be (including idents and titles)
  • Each member of the film crew will have a rough idea of when they will be needed and what they have to do when filming certain shots and scenes.
  • The director can see what they need to film and plan when and where things can be filmed and in what order rather than going back and forth to film shots in the order that they come in. (logic)
Here is an existing example of what an animatic would look like if you were filming a full blown award winning film. This animatic is a clip from the film  The World's End.

This clip also shows you along side what the film looked like and as you can see there are a few minor changes that have been made during the filming which is ok so long as its not something that changes the whole of the script, treatment and anything else you can think of. Basically nothing major has been changed.

Our Thriller Animatic

We created our animatic by using the images from the storyboard, adding in all the sound etc. Once our first version of the animatic was completed we shared it with an audience to gain feedback on what was good and what needed to be improved upon.

When asked 'Is the narrative clear?' our audience said that they could understand the basic storyline of what was going to happen in the film. There was only one person that didn't quite get the idea of the story but once they watched it again it was clear to them.

The audience also said that our film had a wide variety of frames ranging from establishing shots right though to close ups of peoples faces or objects. They all had a purpose to them too and that there was a motivation to do something.

The film fills the 2 minute opening length only going over by a few seconds.

There were titles include in the animatic which the audience said were added over the top meaning they could be seen as the action on screen was going on. Someone did say that it would be clever if we added in images to the title at the end seen as though the film is called 'The Black Widow'. It was suggests to add an image of a spider to link it as well as add atmosphere and a double meaning to the film name. The ident was clearly there in the right place as well as all the appropriate titles that were suited and fitting to our film were all there in the order from our earlier research.

Most of the soundtrack was said to have been appropriate however the heart beat at the end was considered 'too long' and didn't bring any tension just killed it as it went on and on with no progression. It needed to either increase in volume or stop completely was the opinion of the audience. The music however was said to have matched the film well and the speech fitted in with the film well and clearly told the audience what was going on.

All in all the audience said that the animatic was clear and understandable and did the job it needed to do, tell the story of the film before it has even been filmed. The audience said other than a few minor tweaks Reflection Studios were ready to being the filming process following this animatic.

Now here is Reflections final edition of the Thriller Opening Animatic, sound and all!

We now have an idea of what our film should look like if we follow it right. All that's left to do now is the risk assessment and film shooting schedule.

20 Jan 2014

Thriller Storyboard

Now's where the Thriller come alive. The storyboard allows us to show out story and what its going to look like before its even been filmed!
What is a Storyboard?
A storyboard is a plan of a film that is in the stages of being created using images or illustrations. A storyboard enables a film production company to display their film and have a plan of what the film is going to look like before its created.
What are the conventions of a storyboard?
Features of a storyboard include:
1.Scene Numbers- Scene numbers are needed to prevent confusion as there may be many scenes and shots could end up in the wrong place.
2.Shot numbers- By putting in the shot numbers, again it prevents later confusion when an animatic is created from a storyboard. There will be loads of shots in just a few minutes of a film so it's important to number the shots.
3.Drawings and sketches of the scenes- This is what brings the idea in your head alive by sketching out the shots that will make up your film. A film really begins to come to life when the shot sketches are created.
4.Shot Selection- Shot selections are shown through the images and sketches, e.g. close up, long shot, mid shot etc.
5.Dialogue- The dialogue going on in each shot is written underneath the image/illustration to give an idea as to how long the shot needs to last.
6.Camera Movement-
7.SFX- Any special effects such as snow, a flash, explosion etc. need to be included inn the storyboard.
8.Location-Location type needs to be added to the storyboard. Where it is being filled and whether its int. or ext. etc.
Benefits of producing a storyboard before filming?
  • By having a storyboard it you have a plan on what you are going to be filming. You don't have to follow it exactly if another shot type or camera movement is better but having a plan that you can roughly follow is helpful.
  • Planning out what you are going to do allows the studio team to all be in agreement on what is happening in each shot without anyone not knowing what is going on or disagreeing the day you start to film.
  • By planning you know exactly what is going on when which prevents you from getting confused or frustrated.
  • Without a plan you are more than likely to lose all hope and sanity. If you plan out each shot you have a fighting chance of creating a good film without ripping someone's head off.
  • Allows a studio team to get all the details on each shot like how long they need to last with the dialogue used and when the SFX's are going on.
  • You don't have to be an artist to create a storyboard. So long as you can see what is going on in the scene without wondering what the scribble on the page is supposed to represent!
Example of existing media storyboards
This is the storyboard for an extract of Forrest Gump. This storyboard is what we see or hear on the screen illustrated in individual shots to allow easy creation of the film.

From this storyboard the following extract from the film was created and this is what it looks like after all the editing and shooting of the film. This extract starts from 0.12 seconds.

Reflection Studio's Thriller Storyboard

And so here is the storyboard for our Studio's opening to a thriller including all the things needed in a storyboard.

Storyboard for Thriller
With the storyboard now complete and the thriller opening starting to come together next in the process of creating this opening is the animatic.

Research 3- Costume

The costume choice of the both the characters in our film is very important. Each item of clothing represents and stands for something that is either significant to the plot or the characters attitude and motive.

Crimson, the female character in our film comes from a Upper class family, so as she her parents will have an adequate amount of disposable income this will allow her to have a more expensive wardrobe, which could feature designer clothes, bags, accessories etc… However, seen as Crimson is the first to be introduced in our film when she is in her bedroom, she will be wearing a pair of tight denim jeans, a woolly jumper that looks rather expensive and a pair of pink fluffy socks that you would see someone wearing around the house which suggests to the audience that she lives there or it is a place she is familiar with without physically telling the audience this is where she lives. She will be in this outfit as she wishes to relax and feel comfortable in her house and as she is alone, she has know one to impress. Although, she is wearing a golden necklace as she is a 'girly girl' and she loves jewelry and shiny things. The gold necklace also suggest her wealth as an un-wealthy person is less likely to be wearing a gold chain. This again suggests to the audience that she comes from a rich background or her parents are wealthy.

Compared to Crimson, the male character Luke, comes from a Working class family who lives on a council estate. He will be wearing a big over sized black jumper, with dark skinny jeans and a pair of Converse.  He shall wear this attire as he is from the 'Gothic' genre and his friends are also Goths. In addition to this, Luke's clothes will not look brand new and they will not look too expensive as he only works at a low paying job and his parents can't afford to waste money on expensive brands. The jeans may be ripped and the converse all dirt covered and scruffy to clearly convey to the audience that he is the complete opposite to Crimson.

When crimson appears in the first and last scene she will need to wear similar style clothes to Luke to create this hidden identity of the character.

We've got all the research we need on our location, props and costume. Next up for our production studio is the storyboard that will bring our story together shot by shot.

18 Jan 2014

Research 2- Props

Props are a major part of a film. Each prop serves a purpose within a film meaning one slight slip in prop choice and the meaning of your film could be changed in the mind of the audience.

So here you'll find the props research. This includes all of the props that we will be considering using in our Thriller opening. Each item has been analysis as to what the object is designed to represent in the Thriller opening and how the audience may view that object when watching the Thriller opening.

Now the props research has been completed we've now got to decide on the props that will be used, when and by who. So here you will film a table that underlines all these points to make life easier when collecting all the props needed.

The location and Props research is sorted. Whats next? Ah, costumes, again a key feature for manipulating the audiences opinions and views of characters and the overall film.

15 Jan 2014

Research 1- Thriller Location

No location is used just because that's the location we can find so we'll have to make do with it. Thought is actually put into finding each location that you see in all these blockbuster films and a lot of time too!

In our thriller, the choice of location has a big impact on the audience's interpretation of the film and what the see on screen symbolises something that is significant to our film ideas. Each part of the location symbolises a part of either a character or the storyline and the plot of the thriller in the opening.
Here is a list of our Locations and images of locations we have found and will be using in the filming of our thriller.

Location 1- Dark gravel filled area- ext.

This location will feature near the beginning of the 2 minute opening. A dark eerie area is needed to represent the mysterious action that is occurring on screen at this location. The location needed to be abnormal and a place you wouldn’t traditionally go to ‘hang out’.

Existing Media:

This gravel grounded area is an idea of what we are looking for in a location for our thriller film opening. The idea that there are crooked paving stones places within the gravel gives us the impressing of a place that isn’t quite right and not a place you would really want to hand out. The location we chose doesn’t need to be as perfect as this location. This image represents the ideas we have as a production team in what we’re looking for in a location for this opening. It has the feature of the opening we had in mind with the gravel ground and stones lying around.

Real Location chosen:

The location chosen to us is perfect in representing the action that is going on onscreen at the time this location is shown. The location isn’t prefect which represents the idea that the main character Crimson isn’t as perfect as people thing. It gives the message of not judging things by the way they look. Also this location is rather eerie and not a place in which people would wish to hang out at night or be there on their own. The miss placed paving and broken fencing creates an atmosphere where the audience get the idea that only the eeriest and creepiest of people would hang out in a place like this. This then emphasises the idea of a mysterious figure hanging around in this area at night which allows them to draw the conclusion that whoever the character is isn’t going to be up to any good here. The fencing suggests that the figure shown shouldn’t be where they are meaning again they aren’t the nicest of people to be hanging out with. This again emphasises the action that then follows the establishing shot of this scene when a figure comes on with a hockey stick dragging in their hand. With an obviously creepy location such as this one, the audiences can easily put two and two together and work out that the character just shown has been out causing trouble but doesn’t give away to much of the upcoming storyline.

Location 2- Dark Alley- ext.

This location features in the film when the mysterious character walks off with the hockey stick dragging in their hand. This again needs to follow on from the previous location with its eeriness and darkness that doesn’t quite seem right.

Existing media:

This is the style in which we wanted this location to be. The alley is narrow and could probably only fit one or two people down which is what we want. In the dark a place like this would have the ‘you wouldn’t want to meet anyone in an alley like this’ look.

Real Location Chosen:

This location gives us a lot to work with. The over grown weeds within the gravel suggest to the audience that no one ever goes here which instantly gives them the idea that this character that is seen in this location can’t be doing much good if they are hanging around in a place such as this. The gravel floor allows us to create tension though the sound it makes. When you hear the sound of gravel you know someone is coming or is nearby. The fact this loud gravel sound is going to be made and no one has come out to investigate or is around to see who it is suggests that it isn’t a place that people would want to or should go to. The fencing and walls allow us to represent the idea that its blocked off and that no one really should be going down here without permission. With this location the camera work as well as the sound can add to the overall effect and creation of atmosphere.

Location 3- Crimson’s Room int.

Crimson the main female character has two sides to here and so her room has two sides to it. It has this happy go lucky girly girl feel to it and then later on in the film it turns dark and vicious and so through her room we need to reflect this change as well as her personality.

Existing Image:

This image shows the girly girl side of crimson but shows it could easily be a cover up and easily changed to portray the dark murderous side hidden within the character.

Real Location Chosen:
This location will be dressed up with clothes and fairly lights to make it look more like a girl’s room. The size of the room will represent the wealth of her or her parents. Usually the more wealthy have a larger room such as this. The large sofa will be covered in clothes that are of fine materials to represent again the wealth she has and the colours will symbolise the innocence and purity the main character has. As the props list will show there will be many toys around the room such as collectable bear and dolls. They will be perfectly aligned around the room to represent the perfect side of the female as well as show the fact she cares about appearance reflecting the perfectness she shows in the way she looks and dresses. The number of bears and dolls will again show the wealth of this female and suggest that she is in some ways too perfect and wealthy. The lighting of the room will also represent the girly girl side of her and not show through her inner evil until later on in the scene. There will be candles around the room which will be there for later on in the opening.

When Crimson’s personality changes the style of her room changes too; the perfect dolls all around the room now not in line. One set of dolls are taken out and the head has been fetched off the male character and stuck to the female’s hand. This is there to represent the breakdown of the relationship between here and her boyfriend. It brings out her inner evil and the opinion she has on the male race. The candles there were there just for decoration are there to represent a sort of shrine now as they are all lit and lined around the room. They’re there to show the audience the person Crimson is becoming as well as allow them to predict the fate of Luke, Crimson’s Boyfriend.
Location 4- Crimson’s Staircase- int.
This really is there just to allow Luke to get into his girlfriend’s house and up to her room which he doesn’t know is a shrine. The stairs just need to look like a normal set of stairs that allow Luke easy access to Crimson’s private life without permission.
Existing Image:
The stairs don’t need to be too fancy even though Crimson is obviously rich as can be seen from the room Crimson is in. The idea of the stairs being metal and rather normal downgrades Crimson slightly which is what needs to happen in a way.
Real Location Chosen:

The stairs chosen will be decorated so that they look more like stairs in which you would find in a home. These stairs are rather large which still allows the audience to see the rich side of Crimson preventing them from suspecting the inner killer that Crimson has. These stairs represent the pathway to Crimson’s private life and that Luke is in the wrong by entering with force rather than asking and not demanding.
Location 5- The door to Crimson's House- ext.
The door to Crimson's house where her boyfriend is soon to meet his doom in only appears for a few moments when Luke come storming into the house without knocking. We don't want the door to be too fancy and posh as it would detract from the horror that lies within the house now.
Existing Image:
This is the sort of door we were looking for, a wooden door with windows. With this location we want to start detracting from the idea that she's rich and start to give the audiences hint as to what Crimson is really like inside.

Real Location Chosen:

This location is what we are looking for for this scene. Its simplistic yet it does the job we want it to do, look dark and mysterious when Luke is shown storming through it. The door isn't as posh and intricate as the interior but at the point where this door is shown, we don't want the focus to be on how rich Crimson is. The audiences need to start thinking of the other side that Crimson has to her which leads them to the scene that is going to occur in the next shot up until the end of the film. This location isn't in the opening sequence much however it is an important fill shot for the lead up to the events that are about to unfold. There will be a few plants by the door to give the audience the homely feel that a house should have when you enter it which in a way side tracks the audience from seeing the obvious that Crimson is a killer. It distracts the audiences and prevents them from coming to the right conclusion straight away.

With the location research sorted and all the locations that are starring in our film opening, next up is the props research and list!
